Description

The once-natural wetlands of central and south Florida have been extensively engineered to provide flood control, drinking water, water for irrigation and dry land for agriculture and development. Lake Okeechobee provides much of the water storage for South Florida, but when the lake fills quickly, excess water is released to the Caloosahatchee and St. Lucie rivers for flood control purposes. Freshwater discharges to the Caloosahatchee are made, here, at the Moore Haven dam, through vertical lift gates.
